Hi, and welcome back to the Muddy Cross podcast. Thank you so much for joining us. Episode nine.
SPEAKER_00Episode nine, nearly finished.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know. So this one is trusting God when life doesn't make sense.
SPEAKER_00I know. Well, I think that's probably the most important one because it's where your faith wavers, it's where you're gonna go in through so many different mixed emotions and you're really gonna have to dig into him more.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it it definitely is that that challenging one, isn't it? Because more often than not, life doesn't go as expected in so many different ways, in lots of little ways and in big massive ways, you know. And I think that um yeah because of that challenge, it can feel like people have to question their faith.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and and it's really not the point to question your faith, it's the point to dig in further into your faith.
SPEAKER_00Dig in much deeper, yeah. And I think that's where relationship is really important, and we've said it all the way through. Yeah, the the main thing of all of this is to build a relationship. So when things do get hard and questionable, you've got a foundation to go back to. You're not just going, oh well, that's it, I'm done with that, and moving on. You you can come back to it.
SPEAKER_01I I think it's so easy to do that. I think you know, when you look at life, just generally speaking, sort of removing faith side, just the small daily things in life, you know, you're trying to, I don't know, wallpaper, you're trying to do a task and it just doesn't work. It's so easy for us to throw the hands up and say, Oh, do you know what I quit? I I had enough now, and and we walk away. And do you know it's really not the way to to work and coordinate yourself in life, but in terms of the bigger things in faith, there's more to it than that. I feel I mean, certainly from our point of view, the that we've learned, and this is obviously looking back in hindsight, which is the easier part to do. But when things haven't gone life, when you've had a tough period in life, and you can look back and think, do you know what? Actually, I grew a lot during that time, I learned a lot about myself during that time.
SPEAKER_00But that's where hindsight is so important when you're on this journey, because that's your foundation. Because you go, I'm in this, and I don't like where I'm in this, but actually I remember a time, and you and it so it's it's all part of the journey.
SPEAKER_01You know, when we look back, you know, when we look at the scriptures and stuff, we look at the the tellings of of of the various people in in the Bible, you know, you look back and you can think, like, think Joseph, for example. You know, his brothers beat him up, yeah, his brothers sold him.
SPEAKER_00Put him in a pit, let him put him in a pit, you know.
SPEAKER_01All those times you could say that he should have given up, but he still remained very faithful. You know, he don't get me wrong, those things happened to him. I am sure that he was very annoyed and very upset and very hurt and very broken, etc. But his relationship and his faith with God didn't waver it stayed the same.
SPEAKER_00And God knew his heart, which is why he was chosen, because he knew that ultimately he was humble enough to have a forgiving heart. And when it comes to obviously his brothers coming back, he was in a place where he could just forgive because of hindsight, of not looking back and going, Well, you did that, but looking back and going, God used that, yeah, yeah, and what a different way to have that perspective.
SPEAKER_01So it's it's accepting that there will be hard times, that you will be hurt, you will be broken. Um, you know, I I just had before we started this episode, and then you obviously we were gonna be talking about this. I had this vision of being stuck, myself being stuck on it on a on a cliff, and I was holding on to our rope. And you've got that choice, don't you? You got that choice of well, uh the situation was that I couldn't get up any further because I was holding on for for grim death. And I had the faith that this rope's gonna hold me and someone's gonna rescue me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, in that situation, what was my opposite? The other only other option is just to let go and fall. So which one do I choose? And the reason I'm saying that is because it made me think about people in life, so people that maybe don't follow God, and then very easily pick holes in in your faith. And and it's happened to me, not necessarily people picking up holes, maybe people are curious and they're asking, Well, well, why do you believe? I know this has happened in your life, why do you still believe? The point is that you have faith in that case, you have faith in the rope and faith that you're not going to fall.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, because it's God's right.
SPEAKER_01My only other option is to let go, yeah, and I probably will die. And and that's my reason. My reason is that I know that God is real, I know that God loves me, I know that God has me. It doesn't stop the situations around me from happening and situations I find myself in which might not be good for me. But I have my faith. I think it's so easy for other people then to pick holes in other people's faith and say, Oh, well that's God. Well, no, it's not, it's not God, it's the situation you find yourself in. And the reason that you know that you can get through that situation is because the faith and the trust that you have in God, so God doesn't come into question about your situation. And and I I I find I think it's particularly hard when people start in faith and other people come and talk to them about their faith and question your faith. It's kind of that battle of I'm not really sure how to respond. And I'm trying to figure this out myself. I guess that what I would say to those people that are just in their beginnings is that is your faith being tested. Yeah just keep trusted. You might not have the answers to answer somebody else. Just be honest and say, look, I'm at the start of my journey, yeah, and I'm trusting God and I know that this is the right thing. You're very welcome to join me, but don't let other people step in way of your faith, even if you can't express it right.
SPEAKER_00What you've said there, it kind of for me sums up a little bit of trust versus control. As humans, we have that natural nature to want to control. We want to control the situation. We want to be it, it's that security, isn't it? You've you've got that blanket of security. So we always say, like, if you've got enough money and if you've got everything that you think you need, then you feel in control. You feel like you don't need necessarily a higher, you know, God or you know, to kind of lean into because you have yourself, you've got you've built that security around you. That security can go like that. Oh, yeah. But having that faith in God, like we've got more peace and security in this world, knowing that we're in this world, but not of this world, and where we're going to the next world, which brings more peace than any money and security in this world could ever bring. Yeah, like I remember going back in a time years ago where money was never a question. We never had to worry about we had a house, we had cars, we had, you know, we had money in the account, we could go on holidays, do whatever. But I always felt empty. I always felt insecure in myself because I had my biggest fear was death. My biggest fear was something I couldn't control. Yeah, and because now I've I still don't have the control over it, but because I've lent into him and because I have the trust in him, I don't need the control, yeah, I just have peace. Yeah, and that is so much more important, and that's where our first scripture is going to come in. And you may recognise this one because it is your Proverbs 3.5 to 6, and it's trust in the Lord of all your heart lead, not on your own understanding, in all your ways, submit to him, and he will make your path straight. And I know it's the irony, we're bringing that one back in, but it's so true. My analogy there, or my my real life situation there, of having like panic, we've said it before, we've had I've had panic attacks for years, from a little child, a little girl, all the way through to when we first got together. It wasn't until I had my eldest child that I started to try and you know work on it and balance it out, and even then, and I think that's where the whole searching began was you know, it's not just about us anymore, it's about this little being, and I don't want to die and leave him, and I don't want him to die. And you've got all these, and then you start going, no, there's got to be more, and you go on this big journey, and ultimately it's led to peace. But that peace has come not from the human control, it's come from the trust and the trust that we have in him. And as humans, we want that answers, we want the clarity, we want the control, but actually, the reality is life is messy, life is uncertain, life is is about releasing it. Life is about trusting in something higher and bigger than yourself, yeah, and that is God.
SPEAKER_01You're right, and you know, I keep thinking about free will there for some reason, and this is where again we we talk about God and the all-knowing God and He knows everything, but we live in a world where we have free will and and we live with our faith with God. And again, people will turn around and say, Well, why does God let terrible things happen? God doesn't let terrible things happen. God walks with us through the terrible things, and we have free will, we free will to follow God, we free will not to follow God, we free will to act in this world as we please. Okay, our morals kind of guide us through that. But through our free will, that means that things happen in life. People get ill, accidents happen, um, people lose jobs, people get jobs, all these sorts of things. But what God does and our and in our trusting with God is God walks through those times with us, and God helps us through those times, through the good times and through the challenging times as well. Um, if we allow it, that is, you know, because it's our free will to follow God. Um, and when we put our trust in God through the good times and the bad times, He will help guide us and stairs, He will help us learn the lessons that we need to learn. Again, the good and the bad. It's not always about the about about the bad situations. And you know, when I think about God and making our paths straight, um again, it comes back to that free will. We have that choice to to follow him, and um, I think that's really important to mention and and important to remember as well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, and I think it's it's a case of because a lot of the times when you're going through these things, you just don't understand it, do you? You don't understand when why you're in it, why you're going through it, what it all means. Like it can be so confusing, can't it? It's like, why? What and and and you don't want to question, and it you know, it's not that you want to question him or question the situation or anything, but you're like, I'm reading my Bible, I'm doing this, I'm doing that. Why? Why am I going through this? And I know we've said it so many times. Well, like I shouldn't keep saying it, but obviously we're being refined, we're being worked on, we're being shaped, we're being moulded to what he needs us to be. So he needs us to lose a lot of these worldly things that we've attached. This is why children can just have such a deeper connection much quicker than we can, because like they've come from him earlier. We've got, like for us, we've got 47 years of baggage. Yeah, yeah. That you're like it is like a rucksack of baggage that you're carrying away. And as you're going through that, he's going, no, no, no, no, I I need to take that. You you shouldn't have that in your rucksack. That's for me to carry, not you. It's like at night when I say, um, because I always do special prayers with our litlist one. It just seems to really help him to settle and go to bed, and uh, as well as obviously the main prayer. And when we're doing special prayers, I always say, my my last little thing with him is think about today anything that has worried you or troubled you, anything that you just you don't want to be thinking about right now because you just want to be at peace and go asleep. Are you gonna sneeze? That's a sneezy moment, yeah. I'm trying to hold that one off and just think about those things and then take them and bundle them up into a big ball and then throw them in your in your mind, throw them up to God and let him catch them and let him have them. And we should be doing the same. Yeah, we should be sitting with him and taking all those things and going, they're not for me. I shouldn't have those in my rucksack. Yeah, actually, I'm a lot lighter. Like for me, not having the fear of death, like I don't carry that weight with me anymore. I'm I'm lighter, you know, in that. And not because you you've still got the and it goes back to the not understanding. I still don't understand the whole process in the sense of I don't know how I'm gonna die, I don't know when I'm gonna die, I don't know any of that. So there's that whole 100% trusting God in all of that, but at the same time, I've got peace because I know where I'm going. So that kind of blankets over any of those other fears, and it's the same putting the child to bed at night, you just bundle it up and you give it to him. And the minute I say that, it's almost like you can just see that relief in him, and he's waiting for that moment where he can, I can see his mind, and he's throwing it, and you just think that's what this brings. It gives you that that that trust that connection because you're you are Proverbs 3.5, you are giving it to him, yeah, and you are saying, I don't need this. He sees more than we do, he understands all of this more than we do. And his purpose for us, his goal for us, his trust is much bigger than we can ever imagine. And I've got a piece of script. I know you're gonna you're gonna say something. Do you want to say something before I go, scripture?
SPEAKER_01No, go for it.
SPEAKER_00Okay, uh right. So I've got I've got a haircut's gonna remember, I've got Isaiah 55, 8 to 9, and it's for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways, my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are highest, uh higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. And I've chosen this one because there's probably hundreds more that you could pick for this, but I've chosen that one because it's trusting in that he has a greater plan than us, he knows the plan. He knows when he created us in our mum's wombs, he knew the plans and purposes for us, and he knew the path that we wanted he wanted us to take. Now, because we've got free will, and it goes back to what you said earlier, because we've got that free will, we've gone on and we've gone, oh, I'm gonna go over here. And God's going, Oh my days, it's exhausting, it's like having a child running around, and you just want them to go there. Like this is where we're going, and they're going, no, I'm going all around, you know, to get to there. And he's probably exasperated by all of us because he's going, if you'd have just stuck with my path and if you'd just gone there, life would be good.
SPEAKER_01It is, and but I think that for me is that nothing's wasted with God. No, you know, and I'm reminded, um, and we spoke about this with a few people as well, so you might have a giggle, but um, I'm reminded uh uh about uh about Paul in the Bible, and uh who's a tent maker. Oh, and um, you know, that that was his trade when when well we believe it, it seems to make sense when you read the different elements of Paul. Um, and obviously he joined uh Jesus and followed Jesus, but at various points he went back to his tent making in his sort of thoughts, he didn't want to be a burden, he didn't want to accept, always accept um sort of to help charity, he wanted to be able to support, but he always went back to the skills that that he knew. And I think that we today try to fight that. I think because we see this word as a progress, and I think with this word of progress, it means that we have to do better than we have to have more than we previously had, so we have to uh climb up that ladder of success. So the positions in our job, well, I can't have that position, I need to have a managerial position because I had that position, and now I need to have this position, I need to earn more money, I need to have a better car, and it's just this constant striving to have more than. But we were, you know, we've nothing's wasted. The skills that we had when we were younger, perhaps. There's nothing wrong with diving back into those.
SPEAKER_00And I think that we it's using what's in your hands, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Using what's in your hands, and again, this is also trusting God and trusting God and not trusting ourselves, not not working toward our own egos, not you know, and and staying away from those fleshly things as well. So um, for me, it is it it's very much in terms of trust in Him.
SPEAKER_00Um well, it comes down to even creating this podcast, doesn't it? You know, like this was for us, we were sitting there going, Really? This is what you want us to do? Because it's going very public, it's sharing our faith, it's sharing personal stuff about us. And we were both sitting there going, really, this is what you want us to do. And it wasn't until you got confirmation prophetically that we were like, okay, this really is what you want us to do, you know. So it all comes down to it's not following what we want. Yeah, it's it's working with him. So it doesn't mean to say that you've got to do something you hate, you know, or or go through life. And it doesn't equally mean, and please forgive us, we're not trying to say don't have money, don't try and earn, don't try and strive to have things, because if you read the Bible, he wants us to enjoy the riches of the world. He wants us, he says, I want you to go out and multiply, I want you to enjoy, I want you to have the riches, but he wants us to have it, and this is what we've discovered because we always used to say, Oh, you know, don't want to love money and don't want it, but actually, it's not money's the root of all evil, it's the love of money that's the root of all evil. And so having money does allow you to do so much more good in his word if you're using it to his gain.
SPEAKER_01Money and money and success, you know, a success. You you're you're you're more known, you've got a lot of contacts, and you can do great, great.
SPEAKER_00And that's why I love obviously the the Psalter Paul story. I'm not going to go on about it. Watch back because you will see why. Um, but that's why I love that story because he can change any heart. So he could, you know, like he knows each one of us is for the glory of him, and there could be someone out there right now that's massive in the public eye and actually not doing good things, but God's sitting there almost having a chuckle to himself, thinking that's okay, because one day soon, just like Paul Tassalt, I'm gonna turn your heart and you're gonna work for me, and all your followers and all the people that you have around you are then gonna come to me. Yeah, and you're just like, oh, that's just incredible. You can't wait. And that's why we should pray for everyone. Yeah, we should pray for people, even if we disagree with them, even if we don't align with them. Like there's a lot of the government stuff that goes on, and I just think, I just don't want to, like politics, we always said don't want to know. But now I'm like, no, I need to pray into that because I need God to help change their hearts, and the only way that's gonna come is through prayer.
SPEAKER_01Jesus tells us to pray for any loving.
SPEAKER_00Praying is, and praying is the most important thing because it's it's our tool, it's the way we can confess to him, it's the way that we can ask for help from him, it's the way we can build our relationship with him. So prayer is our number one tool.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. I've got a little bit of scripture I want to share through Romans, uh, Romans 8, uh, Romans 8, 28. And it says, and we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. Oh, and and that kind of sums up what we're saying is that all all things in our life, if we choose God, all things in our life, he will bring for the greater good, for the good of God, but ultimately God's God's will is for the for for us, for us to to flourish uh within him. Um and I think that that sums up.
SPEAKER_00And I felt, I don't know, I can't speak for you, you can obviously say yes or no, but I have felt that since we've stepped into this of following him and building relationship with him, I know things haven't gone right from the worldly perspective, and there's lots of, you know, like we said, we're in that boat in the storm, but in that boat, everything feels right, so it just feels like calmness in the boat, yeah. It just feels like internally everything's more at peace, and everything feels so secure internally. No, you even said it, I know you shared um uh a little bit about your health the other day, didn't you? You you put it out the other day a little bit, and you know, you were saying physically, so the physical shell of what you're in um is is in many ways broken, isn't it? There's lots of aspects that you struggle now that you didn't before when you think you used to do obstacles and you used to do all these things that you can't physically do at the moment because you will, at the moment, you will, but inside and and your your mental strength and your faith is strong, yeah, for sure, and that's incredible.
SPEAKER_01I think that really is incredible, and that brings a grice, do you know?
SPEAKER_00That gives a grit piece because it gives a really good foundation then to grow physically from at the right time, and there's so many people out there that are going through physical conditions like you that don't have that, and you just think it's hard, but I'd imagine it's harder, like you were ill before, weren't you? Several, several years ago.
SPEAKER_01You weren't with I mentioned this in the video, it was harder mentally last time, but now that I have, as we say, as this whole episode is about, is this trust in God. Now that I have that trust in God, I know that the phys physical will come back. Um, because we are more than just a physical, fleshly body, you know, we have a mind, we have our own thoughts, um, and and that feels very secure and very solid. So that I mentioned that in that video that I feel in a more solid mental position now than I did when I was you know last time.
SPEAKER_00Because it's obviously things that you're speaking over yourself and you're questioning yourself. Now, instead of just I imagine before you were like a lot of why is this happening, and I can't do this, and a lot of frustration and a lot of you know, just just uh whatever. Now you've got something, haven't you? You've got a tool to now.
SPEAKER_01I give that to God and I say, like, I don't know why this is happening. Yeah, and and it is a physical struggle, Lord, but I I give this to you. Yeah, I give this to you, and I trust that it'll be that it will be well in in time.
SPEAKER_00In you, and I think that's that's such an amazing thing to be able to be honest with somebody and know that we're not alone. I know with our boys, um, especially our middle one and our youngest one at the moment, like when when something happens, they'll always say, It's okay because I know I'm not alone. Yeah, and like how incredible is that that they feel that peace. And I think, like, for me, I I remember I've said it before, if you go back to Grace and the Grit and Faith in the climb. Um, I remember used to, like I've said, I used to sit on the stable roof when I was a kid, and I didn't believe I didn't have any connection with God because I wasn't brought up with that way. Um, and I used to just sit there looking up, talking to the sky, obviously talking to him, not realizing, and going, There's got to be more to this, there's got to be, because it's not understanding, but I'm trying to be honest. I was trying to grasp for that connection. So, how incredible is that that we can have that honest conversation, and if we tune in and we just again allow that silence to happen, because I've always struggled with that, but now I'm I'm better with that, to allow those moments of silence or even play some worship music and just get into that. So it's not about meditating in you know, clearing your mind and meditate with nothing, that is not what it's about. When they when they say about meditation, it is true you can meditate, but you should be meditating in God. So it should be He is on your mind, He is in your thoughts. So we're not clearing our mind because I always used to go back when we were doing like um kind of I say new agey, but I I don't even know what else to call it. But when we were in that, you know, we we were doing all that to sort of healing, and I was going to many different things like sound bars, meditation, and all of that, and it was clear your mind, think of nothing. How impossible! Like, I used to come back so frustrated.
SPEAKER_01I think it's ridiculous.
SPEAKER_00I used to come back so frustrated going.
SPEAKER_01Have you been inside here? You know, it's a lot of clearing to do.
SPEAKER_00And I used to be thinking about the washing, thinking about the kids, thinking about dinner, thinking about whatever. But now when I sit and meditate in God, you're it's purposeful. It is purposeful, and I'm thinking about and I am thinking about different situations, and I'm thinking about you know, like I'm talking to him and asking as well, but I'm I'm doing it in a much calmer and more processed way that's balanced, if you know what I mean. So it's not just clearing the mind of nothing, it's allowing him to really connect spiritually and come in and kind of almost like repair you while you're sitting there. It's incredible.
SPEAKER_01It's giving it to God, you know, carrying my yoga, my yoke is like is what it says in the Bible. And and and so it's yes, you can't clear your mind because you've got a billion things running through your mind, but you can come to the Lord in calmness, yeah, and you can say to the Lord, these are the things that are on my heart, these are the things that are on my mind. I want to just give them to you, yeah. And and with that, and through that, you feel at peace. Yeah. Because you're giving them to him, and be it that he just allows you to see things more clearly, be it that he answers your prayers via somebody coming to help you. Well, there's a a a million different ways that you you know that he can speak and help and walk us through things, but that's the difference, yeah. Is you know, when you clear your mind through that, don't think of anything, it's impossible. But when you come to the Lord, we found it impossible.
SPEAKER_00Some people might say they can do it.
SPEAKER_01When you come to the Lord and you just say, Lord, these are the things that are on my mind and my heart, I just give them to you. Yeah, there is a peace.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and the other and and like I go back to saying, being honest, like I I feel so relieved that I can just share my honest thoughts, and and that can even be questioning things at times, yeah. You know, like when you you've been going through this, and we've had a pretty rough month, if I'm if I'm allowed to say, like to be honest, we've had a pretty rough month, and there's been times in the last month where I'm having to physically feed you. Sorry to say, I'm having to help you in many ways that you probably never wanted me to help you with, and just do stuff because you couldn't move your hands and stuff like that. And there are times where I'm, you know, I'm going outside and I'm having a quiet moment with God and I'm going, why? Help me. Like I'm at my wit's end because I don't know what else to do. I'm trying to carry everything, I'm trying to, you know, make sure the children are okay and work's okay, and you're okay, and everything's okay. And if I didn't have him as a sounding board, I'm not really sure right now. I think I think you'd be um so yeah, and I think going back to before, obviously, when you were ill before, I don't think it was as tough an illness as what you're in now, if I'm honest.
SPEAKER_01Physically, yeah, it was been harder.
SPEAKER_00And so, and I know how I was then, it was a lot of panicking. Well, what am I gonna do? Because you can't, so it was a lot more of a panic. I've got none of that now, you know, and people kind of talk to me and question stuff, and and I go, but it's gonna be alright. I know it's gonna be alright. I don't understand it. I can't, I can't, you know, like give you the answers because I don't know the answers, but what I can say is he's got it. Yeah, and if he's got it and I trust in him, then I've got it because I've got it with him. I'm not on my own in there. And it's going to be okay. And and through, and then like I get I get words, you know, like I'll I'll I'll follow. So like I I got fasting, didn't I? So we've done a long fast. Um, and then it was uh he'll heal through nature, so he'll through my my foods. So we've gone very much on to you know, just clean food, cutting out all rubbish in our diet, making sure there's nothing going in that's going to cause inflammation. And that seems, I don't want to put things out there, but that seems to be helping, you know. So I'm hoping obviously that you know, through the relationship we're building, and the the more you build a relationship, the more clarity of hearing him. But it's okay, I'll go back, it's okay to question. Yeah, and I think it's really okay because faith isn't about pretending, faith isn't because if you sit there and you're like, oh yeah, it's all right, everything's good, and you know it's not good, that's a fake relationship.
SPEAKER_01How are you meant to know stuff if you don't ever question anything?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and and equally, yeah, because like we questioned it on our first couple of years, even of our journey, wasn't it? We were questioning all the way through.
SPEAKER_01And and and it's this trust, it's building this is building trust with God. Is is a relationship is built through questioning because you get to know about each other. God wants to get to know us. I know he already knows us, but we he wants us to get to know him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's the that's the thing, is our thing.
SPEAKER_01And how can we get to know him if we don't question and say, God, well, why does this happen? And then sometimes you get drawn to a piece of scripture and you think, well, that yeah, that answers that. Now it may not be straight away that you've brought a scripture, or maybe you go to service and something you know that the service is about a particular thing that you've been wrestling with during the week, and you're thinking, Wow, yeah, and that's happened so many times to us, and that's getting to know God.
SPEAKER_00That's you know and that for me is why I know we are both so grateful for the start of our journey, you know, from Ruth bringing you know, say inviting us to the church, and from Jiddy and Christiana and and Kate and all the people at the church and that whole community, and this is why community is so important, that whole time of that community when we were doing our um baptism course, you know, for that many, many months worth of course, because we had that opportunity to walk into a safe space and go, I don't understand this.
SPEAKER_01I got a question on this, on this, and this, and this.
SPEAKER_00You know, like with Isaac, you know, the story of Isaac, and you're like, I don't understand this. It makes no sense, Job, you know, like the book of Job. I've read the book of Job so many times, I've listened to podcasts on it, I've dived into it, I've sat out, you know, in a field and just gone, God, you know, so many different connections. And now I love the book of Job. It's one of my favourite books because it just shows that having the right heart and having that trust is everything, yeah, and it is incredible. So, and then you're like you said at the very beginning of this, is we don't have to understand, we just have to know that when we have the hindsight to look back, that we see that he was there and he had his hand over everything, he was helping us because that's starting for us because of where we'd come from with the beliefs that we had and and the strong light we were when we were when we got together, it was you know, no religion, no politics, no football type thing. Again, go back if you want to know more about that. But where we had come from with that, for us to dive back into any form of looking at religion was like no, it was a massive no. So he knew that. Yeah, so it had to be a really good church, it had to be a really amazing pastor, and it had to be a really solid community of people that had all come from similar journeys for us to go, oh, okay, there's got to be something in this, and we trust in this, and that has then led to trusting in him more, I feel.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it was it was definitely a place where we felt that we could uh ask those questions, yeah, and challenge. Yeah, challenge a lot of the you know so it's really important to challenge in an arrogant way. But I remember you know, there's a lot of questions we're after J. Um, because okay, well, if you say this, well, what about that?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because we we we we had concerns, you know, and and and probably baggage from previous or whatever else. So uh no, I do agree that was a massive foundation.
SPEAKER_00It was foundation, and that's why, you know, like I'm saying, it's genuinely okay to be raw and honest.
SPEAKER_01And I think the the thing, you know, this episode is called Trusting, um Trusting God, and trust comes over time. Yeah, I think I think that we I'm saying generally we, yeah, you know, if anyone's watching this that um isn't following God or is questioning God or whatever else, uh like you expect in any relationship with anybody, it comes over time, it comes through questioning, it comes, trust comes through questioning, getting to know somebody and it builds over time. If you're not prepared to look into it and do it yourself, well then you're not going to build that trust and that relationship with God. Yeah, because you wouldn't do it with a human.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You don't just meet somebody and say, Oh, well, that's fine, I trust you, everything's fine. Well, you don't know anything about them. Yeah, so you you do own it to your owe it to yourself to spend that time. If you're curious, yeah, and you're watching this and you're curious about God, is you're not instantly going to get it. No. Unlikely, maybe. I'm not gonna say you're not, you're unlikely gonna get it. Um but you take your time and it builds.
SPEAKER_00And like we've said, haven't we, is that the the Bible is incredible because it comes alive. Yeah, and every time you read it, you get another layer, like an onion, you get another layer and it speaks to you, so you can read the same scripture three years running, and every year it will speak to you in a different way. Because something new will come alive.
SPEAKER_01You're in a different season of your life.
SPEAKER_00And so when we first read the book, like I know when I first read the Bible, I was like, this makes no sense. Actually, the first Bible I bought was that one up there, which is the um 1611th edition King James Version, and I couldn't understand it at all. And I put it on the shelf and I was like, Yeah, I'm not touching that for about three or four years, I didn't even touch it. So, yeah, that was way before it was at the very beginning of um a the journey into all of this, wasn't it? And I was like, somebody said get the Bible, and I was like, and I got it, and I was like, No, I don't understand this and put it away. But now, not that I'm ventured too much into that one, although I do cross-reference because that one is more aligned with God's word. Obviously, these have been changed and adapted to help us to understand it, but I will constantly go over, but it makes more sense now when we read it. But going back to obviously what we were saying about you know, trusting him in the sense of being honest with him and opening up to him and the whole story of Job, I've got a piece of scripture on that, so I'm gonna bring it back to that. And this is Psalms 13, 1 to 2, and it's how long, Lord, will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? That's a really tough scripture, like that is really, really tough scripture. Um, and and it's asking, like it goes on, look, uh, look on me and answer, Lord God, give light to my eyes, or I will sleep um in death, and my enemy will say, I have overcome him. So that is somebody, just like the book of Job, who is in turmoil and really wrestling, like really wrestling, but it goes on and he is there, he will be there. And I I like that scripture, and I brought that scripture in because it shows through all the different examples and all the different um accounts of the Bible, different people that we can refer back to and go through, like Job, that are going through a really tough time, and we can go, they questioned it, yeah, and they challenged him and they asked why, yeah, and yet they still believed, and they still came out of it, and they still didn't understand it in the moment, questioned and challenged it, but ultimately he's there and he's got his hand over it, and he will reveal in God's timing, and because we want control, and because we are impatient, yeah, we want it in our timing, and the whole point of this learning patience and trust is that it's in his timing, he will reveal it. Absolutely, but you have to go through it and you have to be refined in order to understand and see what that journey was all about, yeah, and that's the hard part.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're right, it absolutely is, and these are the human things that we put on. Like I spoke earlier on about how we have this mentality of uh you know achieving more and and uh earning more and so on and so forth.
SPEAKER_00It's just it's it's just not and just walking with him, even if you don't trust it, even if you haven't got the clarity on it, even if you're you know in a place of like real despair, like that, like go back even a few weeks ago, and we were sitting there going, Why? You can't even use your hands, why? You know, it it was it was a difficult process, but at the same time, you're going, why? But I know you're there, yeah. So so it wasn't a despair, why? It was going, it was almost like a laughy, why? I don't get this, but we're all gonna be okay, and we are coming out and we're okay. So, yeah, it is uh yeah, it's a crazy time, isn't it, when you're going through something, but it's good, and I think, and we think it's incredible that like for you, you're in the mix of this, and you're still willing to share and go through that, yeah, because it gives hopes to other people that are perhaps going through something rather than always, isn't it normally always that somebody shares when they're at the other side of it? Like you see these weight loss journeys or whatever, and they show you the before and after, and they go, Look at me now, and you're like, No, I wanted to kind of meet you when you were in the journey because I want to walk that journey with you because I'm walking that journey, and I want to know how you got through it when you were in the hard part, like you were doing weeks' worth of weight loss and nothing was coming off. Yeah, that's the that's the hard part. Yeah, that's the encouraging part of it. Yeah, when you're putting all that effort in and you're not seeing a result in that moment, yet, you know, six months later, yes, but yeah, that's the hard part, and this is why it's so important we feel to share different things. Like when we were going through our miscarriages, we shared, didn't we, with friends. And I had a friend come to me going, I'm so pleased you shared that, because actually it got me through mine. Yeah, and so it's really important that as humans, we don't just close the doors and go, no, no, no, I'll keep this to myself. We should with people you trust, obviously, you should be sharing.
SPEAKER_01Well, we're we're walking life together, aren't we? Yeah, uh, and I think that's the important thing is that we're walking life together, and Jesus was such a great example of how we should live together, yeah. Um, you know, love thy neighbour, and we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. And I think that this is where again that trust in God comes from is that you know the example of how we should live has been given to us, yeah, and and we should trust God with that example and and not therefore try to live our lives through our own eyes and for and for ourselves. Yeah, you know, we need to pick each other up, we need to help each other, we need to encourage each other, yeah, we need to love each other.
SPEAKER_00And I think that's a scripture of like I am a lamp to your feet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I think like I I love that because he's not showing us the whole path, he's literally showing us one step at a time, and it literally is a case of trusting him one step at a time.
SPEAKER_01And I think also, you know, we speak about we spoke about life just generally being too quick. And I think when we slow down in life, we see a lot more, yeah, and and we see other people's struggles, yeah, we see other people's successes, we see other people's abilities, we see each other's love for each other and ourselves. Yeah, um, but whenever we go through life too quick, we become oblivious to those things because we it's too fast. We can't see them and see all, don't you? Again, God is a lamp to our feet because it is slower, and because we then are aware of each other around ourselves. Um, and again, that comes in the trust. Trust me that you can only see this bit because this is all you need to see right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um and and just slow down and take things in. Yeah. I'm gonna use this the story of yesterday, and you're probably going, what is Sean about? So yesterday. What is Sean about yesterday? We had to get somewhere, and normally we're always rushing to get somewhere, aren't we?
SPEAKER_01Well, with kids, you're always you're always late.
SPEAKER_00You're always late, you're always rushing. And when you're rushing, you end up being more late. I don't know how, but you're like, I'm I'm going like I'm going as quick as I can, and I'm still late.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yesterday.
SPEAKER_01We set this satin off, didn't we?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, to get to our destination. And we were like, oh wow, we're gonna be really early. Like, like, really early. Yeah. So I said, well, just slow down, take your time, and let's just enjoy the journey when we get there.
SPEAKER_01And I and I was driving slow. I made a comment, I think, I feel like I'm driving Miss Daisy. Like, I was really like taking driving to the country well below the speed limit, purposefully wasting time.
SPEAKER_00And we got about three minutes from our destination. Oh no, about four or five minutes from our destination, and it dropped down, didn't it? And it's going, you're going to arrive um two minutes early. And we're like, How is that possible? How's this possible? We've been going slower than ever, and then it was four minutes earlier at your destination, and we're sitting there like this doesn't make any sense.
SPEAKER_01I kind of be gone really, really, really slow, and I'm arriving even quicker.
SPEAKER_00And I just made it, I was like, we were joking, and I just looked and I went, This is God telling us if we slow down, we will get to where we need to go with plenty of time and we won't have any worries. We just need to slow down and trust in Him, and we both just love because that is what it gives you, doesn't it? It gives you that peace, yeah, because you're just like, Yeah, it's it's so it just it was just a great moment that we shared of going, this is what it feels like when you walk with God, yeah. Because everything's rushing, and you just feel we're gonna get there, and we're gonna get there fine, and it's all gonna be great.
SPEAKER_01We got there more than fine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we did. So I thought that was really good yesterday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was, it was. So I mean, I think, you know, to kind of sum up today, I think that we you know, we need to speak into uncertainty in our lives.
SPEAKER_00Yes, definitely.
SPEAKER_01I think we do, and and I think that we need to learn. And it's okay to do that, and and learn to, as we've been speaking about this whole time, is trust God, trust God's plans, and and we may not always understand them, yeah, uh, and they may not make sense at the time. No, um, but it's gonna be alright. It's okay not to have the answer because God's God's walking it with us, and um, you know, I think that's really, really important.
SPEAKER_00Um I think trusting God isn't about having everything figured out, it really isn't, is it? It's about choosing to keep going with Him, even when you haven't got it figured out.
SPEAKER_01Even when we we I don't think anyone has really I mean uh people have you can have a plan, there's nothing wrong with that, but there's so many other factors in life that can interfere with our our plans that just yeah, and and and life can change in the blink of an eye.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely like we've we've discovered and gone through many times.
SPEAKER_01That's that's what I mean, is you know you can have plans and you think you've got it figured out, but we don't, and then yeah, just one thing can go wrong, and then that whole you know, your whole basis of security of your life is just gone.
SPEAKER_00Whereas if you've got this as your foundation, the worldly stuff can go, but you're still okay.
SPEAKER_01Even if if you know if that's the case and things go to pot and and the world around you seems to fall apart, you feel strong because you're you've got this bedrock that internally you think, all right, this doesn't look good, but I know that I'm gonna be okay. Uh and and there's something very extremely comforting about that. I mean, I can't, I I don't even think it's a good thing.
SPEAKER_00It's not it's not, yeah, it's not it's not something you can articulate, it's just a feeling.
SPEAKER_01It's a knowing that.
SPEAKER_00And once you've got that feeling, you want everyone to have that feeling because, like I know from me, I know what I was like before. It was like I was walking around completely fine on the outside, but completely a shell on the inside, and now it's reverse.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Like completely reverse. You know, the outside seems chaotic, but the inside solid would much rather have it that way. 100% rather have it that way.
SPEAKER_01I'd much rather have it fine both sides. We're working towards that with him, but internally, I would rather have more security and feel strong on the inside.
SPEAKER_00Having experienced both, yeah, 100%. This is this is yeah, because then you can work towards shortening out the outside. And it and it is true, isn't it? The he is the way, the truth, and the life.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. So I think that brings us to the end of this episode. I think it was really good. I enjoyed this conversation. Uh, we hope that you have enjoyed the conversation too, and we hope that it has in some way impacted you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and we really would encourage you that if it's impacted you or you feel that maybe somebody else needs to hear it, that you share it with them in whatever platform that you listen to. SPEAKER_03Bye.
